A new capital is being built east of Cairo with the tallest skyscrapers in Africa. The city is being built by a Chinese state-owned company, pre-financed by Chinese banks. This will cost the Egyptians dearly: Sovereignty is at stake.
Egypt will soon be in the hands of the Chinese government and thus of the Chinese Communist Party: For the Chinese state corporation "China's State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC)" is building a completely new capital city for Egypt east of Cairo. The costs will be enormous. This will bring the former land of the pharaohs into the debt trap and thus into Red China's dependence.
For the project is being pre-financed by the Chinese: Chinese banks are providing the loans. Around three billion US dollars are initially planned for the construction of numerous skyscrapers, one of which is to be 585 metres high and shaped like an obelisk.
In addition, Chinese banks are financing and the Chinese state-owned company is building a railway connection between Cairo and the new capital for about 1.2 billion dollars.
The total cost of the entire new capital is said to be $58 billion. But one knows how such planning is often only the tip of the iceberg.
Egypt is trying to solve the problem of overpopulation with mega-projects: This will have bitter revenge
Egypt's population is growing rapidly. Just recently, the country passed the mark of 100 million inhabitants. By 2030, it will be 130 million. In 1970, it was still around 35 million. Since only about 5 percent of the country is inhabitable - 95 percent is desert - the overpopulation is particularly noticeable in the urban areas.
Agriculture in the Nile Valley and the river delta has long since become insufficient to feed the population. A so-called second Nile is being built through the Libyan Desert, fed by water diverted from the Nasser reservoir south of the Great Dam of Aswan. But this project will not be enough to put the country's economy and supply on a secure footing.
The government of Abd al-Fattah as-Sisi is under pressure to solve the growing problems such as overpopulation, unemployment, the growing slums, the environmental problems, the water shortage and the internal political division of the country - a part of the population still mourns the Islamist government of the Muslim Brotherhood.
New Capital on the Nile
But instead of carefully tackling the problems in small steps and getting to the root of the problem, the government is doing what is traditional in Egypt: it is again planning a new mega-project. After the Aswan Dam and the Second Nile, the new capital will be the new giant project.
Around 35 kilometres east of Cairo, the new capital is to be built, with skyscrapers and huge monuments. It is supposed to relieve the overcrowded Cairo. Around 6 million people are to move to this new city. And it is supposed to provide a safe residence for the elites. Because Cairo is a politically hot place, as was shown during the revolution of 2011 and the counter-revolution of 2013.
Egypt is neither technologically nor infrastructurally capable of launching such a mega-project on its own. Nor does it need to: because the Egyptian government has a partner who has almost completely taken over the construction project: the Chinese state-owned company "China's State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC)".
In the end, Egypt is threatened with the same fate as many other states in Africa and South Asia: it will become dependent on China. This will increase the influence of Xi Jinping and his communist government in North Africa and the Middle East. Like Iran, Egypt will also dance to Beijing's tune. The Americans and Europeans will lose out.
